Upstairs, the evening always starts the same way:
a quiet that never lasts long.

You hear it: pages turning, a sock brushing the rail, a quick “shh”.
Then a pause. Then laughter that tries to disappear.

The light comes and goes.
Like someone is checking: “are we still visible, or are we gone already?”

Down below, the day’s mess stays - but suddenly looks tidy:
a blanket folded in half, a box pushed in with a foot, the “important stuff” moved into a corner.

And sometimes the lower level becomes the backup plan for the night.
Just bedding. No drama.
